Shepherd Express:
"Now living in the San Francisco area, onetime Milwaukeean Yonat Mayer offers sparkling, sometimes danceable folk/R&B hybrid sound. Though Yonat numbers Sheryl Crow and Lauryn Hill among her formative influences, it takes no great stretch of imagination to envision her sharing an imaginary Lilith Fair bill somewhere Natalie Merchant and Des’ree, either. Reminiscent of the ’90s though all the aforementioned artists may be, Yonat doesn’t sound dated, instead updating her artistry in a manner that could even find her receiving country airplay in that radio format’s current state."
Something Else!:
"Bay Area singer/songwriter Yonat Mayer displays her considerable songwriting prowess on her self-released debut EP Daybreak. Mayer, raised in Tel Aviv, is hardly your typical troubadour. She has a classically trained voice which is effective in evoking jazz, rock and folk music.
Equally compelling is Mayer’s gifted songwriting which evokes Rickie Lee Jones and Toni Childs. Mayer effectively incorporates her eclectic band in fleshing out an electric rock sound. The CD, produced by Jordon Feinstein of Jordan and The Ritual and Robin Applewood of Naked Soul, contains four tasteful and well-crafted original compositions which paint an effective picture of Mayer’s talent, and hint at her potential..." FEMMUSIC: "San Francisco based singer-songwriter Yonat Mayer’s EP Daybreak is a combination of soulful groove songs mixed with honest ballads. This four song EP features Mayer on guitar and vocals, AJ Rivlin on lead guitar and production and arrangements shared by Jordan Feinstein and Robin Applewood. In Daybreak, Mayer is a skilled songwriter. Her lyrics reveal mysteries and stories in an honest way. The first 2 tracks “Intangible” and “Come Around” are filled with a soulful groove. “Come Around” takes advantage of the brassy tone of Mayer’s voice mixed with Rivlin’s guitar. “Intangible” hits hard and fast on the first note and carries through to the end. “Like A Flower” and “Give Up Your Ghosts” show a different side. Both are arranged by Applewood and feature Emily Palen on violin. “Like A Flower” is filled with background vocals and choruses that gives Mayer vocals a rising side. “Give Up Your Ghosts” is a naturalistic song where the lyrics wrap you in a sense of warmth. Yonat Mayer presents two different and distinct voices in Daybreak. One is a soul singer that aches to bring your heart out on the floor. The other is a singer-songwriter who shows you a universe of secrets. Both have strong and captivating lyrics. A full release that reveals which is the true Yonat is waited for with baited breath."
Blues Bytes: "Yonat Mayer is a singer/songwriter based in San Francisco who was raised by a skilled blues and jazz guitarist and educated at one of Israel’s preeminent music schools. Her music draws on numerous genres, including blues, rock, soul, folk, and world music. Vocally, at times she will remind listeners of another singer/songwriter from several years back, Carole King..." Read more
